How Can We Glorify God at Work?
By Wayne Franklin
August 14, 1998

I've asked myself this question many times: How can I glorify God at work? I would like to propose a brief list of SOME of the many ways we can bear witness to the Lord and His love:

-- Work well. When asked how we do such good work, tell our bosses and coworkers that it is because the Lord asks us to.

-- Hang a cross on your wall.

-- When celebrating a success (even a little one), exclaim "Praise God!"

-- Pray before each meeting. I'm sure we've all been in meetings where a little divine intervention could have helped; so ask for it.

-- Read Scriptures during lunch.

-- Wear a cross or other clearly Christian symbol.

-- Put a Christian license plate frame on your car.

-- Be generous. When a coworker asks to borrow money for lunch, don't just loan it to him--give it away; or better yet, take him out to lunch on your dime.

-- When interviewing for a new position, make sure your new boss-to-be knows you're a Christian. How might you do this? Say, "I am a Christian."

-- Meet with fellow believers periodically to study the Word and pray together.

-- Ask your friends where they go to church. No matter what they say, it'll be an opening to share the Gospel.

-- Make sure your coworkers know that you don't believe in luck nor superstition, but in the Lord.

-- When somebody sneezes, say, "God bless you."

-- Smile. A lot. :)

-- When you notice a coworker is down, offer a word of encouragement from the Word.

-- Refuse to forward un-Christian and vulgar emails. Instead, send encouraging, witnessing ones.

-- Remember what James says about controlling the toungue. And remember what our Lord Jesus said about how it is what comes out of a man's mouth that defiles him.

-- Vote. As Christians we are still called to participate in the world, providing a Christ-like influence whenever we can.

-- Never try to cheat anyone, even the IRS.

-- Make investments in the relationships at work. In other words, get to know your coworkers. Become a friend instead of merely a coworker. Minister to them.

-- Start and participate in a "Scripture of the Day" emailing to fellow believers.

-- Never have ulterior motives at work. When you make or recommend a decision, search your heart for any selfish or ungodly thoughts, and pray the Lord replaces them with His will.

-- Remember that you have been placed at your job so that you may bring glory to God, not in order to receive money, food, nor happiness. These other things will come in abundance when you remain focused upon the Lord. [Of course, this is not meant to prevent a change in jobs. The Lord can use you no matter where you are.]

-- Invite others to join you at church next Sunday.

-- When others are troubled, offer to pray for them. Another really nice ministry is offering to pray WITH them.

-- Volunteer for the jobs which are "beneath" you. Remember the humility of Jesus?

-- Make it a point to join conversations of philosophy or religion. There will likely be an opportunity to share the Gospel.

These are just a few ideas on how we can share the Good News with our coworkers. After all, we've been commanded to make disciples of all nations. Why not start with those we encounter every day?

God bless!
