Two Lives, One Messiah, Part 1: I Want A Sign!
Two Lives, One Messiah, Part 1: I Want A Sign! By Hilary Grossman December 11, 2000I was brought up in a loving Jewish family. Although my older brother and my twin sister and I were not religious, we had a traditional and cultural Jewish upbringing. While in college, I met a fine Jewish boy. I was working in a hospital in Montreal, and led a life that never "strayed off the beaten path." I was ready for married life. Because of my relationship with Ron, I inherited a whole new "network" of friends. In April of the year we were to be married, our close friends from this new network were also married. George is Greek. Gerrie is Jewish. Just prior to the wedding, Gerrie's sister, Carole, began to date a born-again Christian. Gerrie's Jewish parents expressed concern and wanted to find out about this boyfriend. Their inquiries sparked interest of their own. The result was that in July of that year, Gerrie's Jewish parents were also bom again, just as Carole had been. George, Gerrie, Ron, and myself were intrigued. Back then, a cosmetics company was running television ads for its deodorant asking whether you were "under the dome of protection." We now saw Gerrie's family as being "under the dome." As others we knew made the same decision to become "born again", we laughingly referred to them as also being "under the dome." Ron and I were married in September of his last year of university. The first weekend after returning from our honeymoon was spent with George and Gerrie. On entering their home, Ron went with George to one room, and I went with Gerrie to another. What I heard shocked me. Our close friends were now "under the dome." Meeting back in the living room, I was horrified to learn that my Jewish husband of 12 days was now "under the dome." So began my married life. It was not the quiet life I had dreamed of. Our daily routine now included The Bible. The phone would ring and I'd hear George say: "Praise the Lord, how are you today?" Our Saturday nights were not only "hockey night" but were also, to me, constant "Bible thumping." I was exasperated and told Ron I could no longer tolerate this. So when our friends came over on Saturday nights, I watched hockey while George, Gerrie and Ron studied the Bible, but with "less pounding, please." Ron and our friends began to attend a home Bible study. Rather than sit at home alone, I tagged along. The study was in Genesis, and I was absolutely fascinated by creation. I believed in God. I did not believe in a "big bang." We were too complex creatures to have just happened. I began to look at the world differently, seeing God's creation everywhere. I listened intently to the studies, and began to read to find out who this God is. By August of 1978, 1 had begun to run out of questions. Ron and I went camping in Upstate New York that summer with Gerrie's parents, Bill and Roz. We were on a "liquid protein diet" - quite the fad at the time. Camping and dieting do not mix well. By Saturday night, we were hungry, cranky, and bored. Our conversations turned to spiritual things. After many questions, Bill finally asked me: "What is stopping you from accepting Jesus as your Messiah?" I believed in God. I believed Jesus was the Son of God who had died and was resurrected three days later. I had trouble believing I was a sinner. I led a good life. I was a good girl. I said I needed a sign. I wanted to know God was real. As the evening wore on, we became very hungry. We decided to drive to Plattsburgh to get something to eat. As we exited off the interstate two things happened. The light turned red. There were no other cars on the road. Then, as our car slowed, another car came - it seemed from nowhere - and stopped directly in front of us. Ron and I were in the back seat. Bill said to me, "Read that bumper sticker." I leaned forward to read: "Give Jesus a chance." Less than 20 minutes earlier I had asked God for a sign. He gave me one. That was Saturday night. Monday morning I sat at my kitchen table with Ron, admitted I was a sinner and asked Jesus to be Lord and Saviour of my life.
