What's In a Name?
By Wayne Franklin
April 8, 1998

You know, labels and names have become so corrupted these days. If I say I'm Christian, it now means a million different things to a million different people. This is really sad. Like C. S. Lewis once wrote, it used to be that a "gentleman" meant something unique. It described the attitudes, social status, and lifestyle of a man. Then it was perverted into meaning just any ol' nice guy. Likewise, I believe the label "Christian" has become perverted in such a way as to avoid offending anyone.

If the name "Christian" were always used as defined in Scriptures, and then if I were NOT referred to as a Christian, I may very well get my feelings hurt. But what would this say to me? It would say that I do not fit this description well. And this means that I am not what my Lord is calling me to be. This indeed is a failing that I and the Lord need to work on.

I am learning that there are self-proclaimed Christians who would not agree with many of the points mentioned in Scriptures. How can the name "Christian" be reasonably applied if these folks believe in reincarnation, or the salvation of everybody regardless of beliefs (universalism), or that the Word of God is not fully inspired? (Note that I am not implying that these folks are not saved. Only the Lord can know their hearts.) By referring to themselves as Christians, it waters down the once-accurate description of real Christians.

I am not a fan of labels in any case, because in today's world, they tend to inflame people to passion and rage, thereby losing reason. But it has become a little frustrating for me because I cannot use the label "Christian" anymore without a great deal of explanation. I cannot say that I'm Christian (and leave it at that), because others don't know the true definition anymore.

On the flip side, I want to share what a wonderful gift this is! Our Lord, in His infinite wisdom, has allowed us to pervert this label. Why do I say this is good? Because now, when asked, me must explain what real Christianity is!!! Now, when we're asked, "Are you Christian?", we can respond with the whole, true Gospel!! The Lord has addressed two concerns in one swoop: the perversion of the "Christian" label, and our own reluctance to share the Gospel. By providing this opportunity, He is urging us to return to His true Word and to our responsibility to spread the Good News.

First of all, I'd advise you to wear your Christianity on your sleeve, so to speak. Make it obvious that this label applies to you. Then, when you're approached about it (or when you approach others), clarify the label with the story of the Gospel. Share the good news that Jesus, the Son of God, died for our sins that we might live with Him forever. And remember, the definition of Christianity which others will see is our example--how we live our lives. So let's live our lives as our Father would have us live.

Father--Daddy, you are so cool! You never cease to amaze us with your wisdom. Thank-you for reminding us of our mission--or rather, commission. Please continue to be with us as you send us into this sinful, perverted world. Amen.
