Meet Dave
By Daniel Parkes
July 29, 2002

Meet Dave. Dave is unkempt. Dave has a tattoo. Dave didn't know love from his father. I picked up Dave as he was making his way across Canada, thumbing a ride.

Before Dave had a chance to close the door, I asked him, "Do you know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?" Dave responded, "Yes, I gave my heart to him about four years ago."

Dave and I quickly got into a spiritual conversation. Time was tight. Dave would only be with me for about 5 minutes. I knew I had to make the most of it, and ... was I not a servant of the Lord?

"Lord, what are you saying?" That was the most important thing to consider now. Jesus said, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise." (John 5:19b)

I had to "see" what God was saying to me. Spiritual discernment had to be exercised. The spiritual eyes that God gave me at the time that God saved me had to be used! So I used them and proceeded to talk with Dave, by faith.

"Where have you come from, Dave?" I asked.

"My mother was sick," was the answer.

"How is she now?" I asked.

"She died," Dave responded.

Dave and I spoke about relationships in his family, and then we turned to talk about his dad. It was not a surprise to me that Dave told me that he did not have a good relationship with his dad. If Dave was not a street-person, he certainly qualified by his appearance. And 99% of all street-persons have one thing in common: They do not have a good relationship with their father.

"The last thing dad did to me was argue!" Dave said to me, expressing great sorrow. "And then he died!" Dave exclaimed.

"When was the last time that you saw him?" I asked.

"About fifteen years ago," Dave responded.

"And when did he die?" I asked.

"On September 22, 2000."

"Dave," I said to him, feeling God's leading, "my own dad died on September 21, 2000" -- the day before -- and the last thing he did to me was argue, as well. Dave, I want to pray for you," I said.

I put my hand on Dave's shoulder, knowing that it was not by accident that God had called us together. As I prayed, Dave cried. I gave Dave a pamphlet that I had with me in the car to bring him encouragement. Then, as Dave expressed to me that he could use a couple of sandwiches, I gave him ten dollars and said, "I think this will cover a couple of sandwiches".

Dave at first refused the money, saying, "No, that's okay." But I urged him, saying, "No, please keep it."

"Well," Dave said, "I'm kind of like you. I like to give things away. I probably won't keep it." I looked Dave straight in the eye, and said, "This is for you. Spend it on yourself. It's okay. You don't have to give it away. I think God just wants you to have it and enjoy."

I don't remember what prayers I prayed that morning, but I think God answered some of them in that meeting with Dave that afternoon. It was not the average encounter. It was a BLESSING sent from heaven.

Quoting Isaiah 61, Jesus said, "The Spirit of the Lord [is] upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord." (Luke 4:18-19)

Friends, this is what it's all about.
